Scope and Content

"The Stars and Stripes Newspaper" for May 27, 1945. The newspaper is 12" x 18" when unfolded, 1 page front and back. The paper was the daily newspaper for the U.S. Armed Forces in Europe during World War II, and contains articles pertaining to the post-war occupation of Europe and of the then continuing war in the Pacific. This particular paper was the Southern Germany Edition, Volume 1, Number 20. The title includes an image of two American flags on poles, crossed. The front has a map of the United States with ocean routes to the two theatres of war shown, and the back has two cartoons at the top and bottom. The upper right corner of the paper has been ripped off, and a portion of the "Better Shed That Pet Mongoose If You're Heading for the States" article at the bottom of the front page is circled in red pencil or crayon; the circled area alludes to regulations for bringing home captured enemy equipment.
