Scope and Content

A collection of photocopies of newspaper clippings related to Superior Depot station agent Robert H. Hillen, 1918-1931. The articles all came from the Boulder Daily Camera and Denver Post, and are titled as follows: "Superior Patriotic Work is Anything But Inferior", Denver Post, January 25, 1918 "Station Agent At Superior Up on Fight Charge", Boulder Daily Camera, April 2, 1931 "Station Agent of Superior, Colo. Dies in Denver", Boulder Daily Camera, October 15, 1931 "Funerals" [Robert Hillen obituary], October 17, 1931 The first article details the efforts of Hillen's wife, Jeanie Hillen, and others to raise funds for American soldiers during World War I. The article praises the town of Superior, where the Hillens operated the Superior train depot, as "SUPERIOR ever since the war started" due to the large sums of money collected by Superior's 400 residents. Jeanie is listed specifically as helping raise funds for the Denver Post smoke fund, with other contributions by Superior residents to the Red Cross and the buying of Liberty Bonds also mentioned. Robert is mentioned as a committee member for the Denver Post smoke fund. The article from April 1930 reports on allegations made by the superintendent and a teacher at a school in Superior against Robert Hillen over a fist fight he supposedly started after his son was given a low grade at the school. E.N. Donnellan, the deputy district attorney of the area, accused Hillen of "disturbing the peace." The son mentioned in the article may in fact be Hillen's grandson, who lived with him for a time at the Superior Depot. Interestingly, Hillen is noted specifically as the station agent of the Depot, working for Colorado and Southern Railway. The last two articles are obituaries for Robert Hillen after he passed away in October 1931. There are two copies of each in the collection. One of the obituaries has inscription in red ink written by Katherine Renfroe, a great granddaughter of Hillen, which corrects a statement made in the column about Hillen not having children; he had one son, and two grandchildren.
