2016.18.1Scope and Content
School scrapbook compiled by Broomfield resident Ella Mitze between 1924 and 1928. The book is 6" (w) x 9" (h) x 1.75" (d), hardcover with a blue textured color and a gold lettered title at the top of the front cover, "School Friendship Book." A simple black illustration is imprinted in leather on the front cover, showing a door with an ornate arc over it. Pillars and what appear to be small sailboat statues are depicted on either side of the door, with stairs leading down from the doorway and pillars. The spine also has lettering, "School Friendship Book" and "Reilly & Lee", the publisher.
The book was a published scrapbook for school related material with designated areas to write or paste items, complete with printed headings. It was published by the Reilly & Lee Company out of Chicago, Illinois, with illustrations and design by Clara Powers Wilson. The inside cover has a designated area to write in who the book belonged to. "Ella Mitze, Broomfield Colo." is written in pen, with "Lorraine School 1924" listed as the school graduated from. The Loraine School was a one room schoolhouse in Broomfield where Mitze received part of her education, before going to Skinner Middle School and North High in Denver. The book was given to Ella Mitze by her teacher from the Loraine School, Emily Kruegel, in 1924 shortly before Mitze started high school. Kruegel would later marry Broomfield resident and business owner Miles Crawford and take his last name. A written note from Kruegel on the inside cover page states, "As a remembrance from your teacher Miss E. Kruegel 5/9/24."
The contents of the book mostly include written notes, student signatures or comments, and pasted items pertaining to Mitze's time at North High School, including: newspaper/magazine clippings; envelopes with invitations, programs, and graduation cards; calling cards of fellow students; ribbons for contests and school colors; and one photograph print of Mitze as a child. Mitze generally organized the material in designated subject sections of the book, such as classes and classmates, athletics, clubs, faculty, and commencement, filling most of the book's 190 pages.Collection
