2016.18.3Scope and Content
A composition book used by Ella Mitze for her high school English class, 1928. The book is 8" (w) x 10" (h) x .5" (d), with a hard, fabric cover. The book is also bound with string, covered by fabric on the outside spine. The front cover has a magazine clipping with a photographic picture of aspen trees in a field with mountains in the background. The picture is black and white, but with portions of the image colored in with gold and green on different trees. Mitze wrote various labels for the notebook on the cover in pen: "Period 1" in the upper left corner; "English 8" in the upper right; "Room.1.L." in the lower left; "Home Room 1.M." on the bottom edge; and her name, "Ella Mitze" in the lower right corner.
The inside cover reiterates the information on the cover, including the date "Feb 20, 1928" and the school, "North High School." A magazine clipping with a photographic image of the Abraham Lincoln statue in Lincoln Memorial with two men standing near it is just below the inscription. The first page has an index which serves as the book's contents, including compositions, spelling, quotations, and "miscellaneous." The compositions pertain to a variety of subjects, including Abraham Lincoln and slavery, Edmund Burke's views on the American colonies and politics, and book reports on works like A Tale of Two Cities, along with other writings. The spelling assignments also include definitions and synonyms of the spelled words, and correlate somewhat with the composition assignments' subject matter. Many of the quotations, likewise, were collected from the individuals discussed in the compositions, like Abraham Lincoln. The miscellaneous section of the book includes pasted clippings of various poems from newspapers and magazines that Mitze collected.Collection
