2016.18.5Scope and Content
A yearbook from North High School in Denver, "The Viking," that belonged to Broomfield resident Ella Mitze, 1927. The book is 7.5" x 11", hardcover. The cover has a textured, raised image of a bird-like figure, the sun, and stars molded or stamped onto it in gold coloration, likely depicting a Hopi Man-Eagle as described in the book's introductory pages. The theme of the yearbook is the rite of passage for young Hopi men, as compared to high school students' academic careers. Several images in the book also pertain to this theme, including a round Native American design in the inside cover. Ella Mitze's name is inscribed within the inside cover image.
The yearbook is divided into several sections across 151 pages, including class and student pictures, school clubs, athletics, alumni, faculty, and honor roll. Many students have signed and written comments on blank pages near the front and back of the book for Mitze, as well as on certain pages throughout the book. In 1927, Mitze was a junior at North High, having previously attended the Loraine School in Broomfield and Skinner Middle School in Denver before starting high school. Since Broomfield had no high school at the time, Mitze had to attend North High for her education in Denver.Collection
