2016.20.1Scope and Content
Baptismal certificate for Broomfield resident Ella Wilhelminne Mitze, October 29, 1910. The certificate is 12" x 16", printed on a thick, multilayered paper. Several color illustrations of angels are depicted near the top of the document along with a dove, possibly representing the Holy Spirit. Pink and purple flowers are seen to the left of the certificate's main text. An illustrated picture of a baptism, likely depicting John the Baptist, is portrayed at the bottom of the document. A seal with a book in the middle and text around the edges can be seen imprinted near the bottom of the document.
The certificate was originally printed in Germany, and was both printed and written in German. Small text in the lower left corner states "No. 503. Printed in Germany." It was published by Eden Publishing House in St. Louis, Missouri. The text was also printed in a Gothic script, apparently used in Germany until World War II. The certificate was likely given to the Mitze family through a local Broomfield church catering to German immigrants at the time. The Bible verse Mark 16:16 is displayed at the top of the document, saying "Whoever believes and is baptized, He will be blessed" in German. Ella's parents, Ernst Mitze and Louise Weigele Mitze are listed, as well as her godparents, Jacob and Emilia Kaelberer. Ella's birth date is listed as December 22, 1909. The main text, in German, states that Ella "Has been on the 29th of October, 1910 in Broomfield, CO In the Name of the Tripartite God Baptized". The document was certified and signed by G.A. Schmidt, the church pastor.
A full, typed English translation of the certificate is included with the original document.Collection
