Scope and Content

A ledger book full of stock certificates for the Broomfield Reservoir and Ditch Company, 1921-1955. The book is 7.5" x 16," approximately 50 pages, with a dark leather and board cover, adhesive bound. A tape label placed on the cover has inscription in black ink that reads, "Stock Ledger, Broomfield Reservoir and Ditch Co, Owned 100% Turnpike Land Co And Abandoned." The book's contents are comprised primarily of whole stock certificates for the Company that were either never torn out or were taped back in when all shares of the company were sold to the Turnpike Land Company in 1955. Some other documents, such as receipts and tax documentation for the Company, are also bound. The stock certificates show record of all partial owners of the Broomfield Reservoir and Ditch Company from its founding in 1921 to when its land and water rights were sold off in the 1950s. The most significant owners of the Company included Philip A. Zang, Adolph F. Zang, Charles L. Patterson, Minnie E. Zang, and their family investment firm, The Adolph J. Zang Investment Company. The latter four individuals and organization served as the Company's most prominent stockholders, with Adolph F., Minnie, and Charles Patterson serving as directors until 1947; the investment company held a majority of shares until that time. Since the Company served as a not-for-profit organization to provide irrigation water for the Broomfield community, some of the remaining stockholders were Broomfield residents with stakes and interests in the area. Such Broomfielders included train depot agent Clarence Vaughan and his wife, Julia. In 1947, the majority of the stock was sold to other individuals who along with remaining stockholders transferred ownership of the Company to the Turnpike Land Company in 1955. The company was effectively dissolved in order to reallocate land and water rights to develop the Broomfield Heights community.

Provenance

Notes

Custodial History: This book and its contents are part of a larger group of records originally owned by Bob Ide, who donated them to the Broomfield Depot Museum in 2012 (see accession 2012.7). He obtained the records from his employer, Transamerica Development Company, in the 1970s after he worked selling many of their assets in the Broomfield area. Transamerica had acquired the documents from Turnpike Land Company in 1964, which itself had previously acquired the records of Broomfield Reservoir and Ditch Company in 1955; Broomfield Reservoir and Ditch was founded in 1921 by the Zang family.
