2023.0.46Description
Jar of mingled soil/dirt from the Soil Exchange Ceremony on October 11, 2023 at the Brunner House between the City and County of Broomfield and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes (headquartered in Concho, Oklahoma). Soil is housed in a historic Ball jar. The ball jar was donated by Tim Harmos. Confluence members Marrton Dormish, Philip Gover, and Lori Lane spoke at the event, as did Broomfield Mayor Guyleen Castriotta, Chester Whiteman (Language and Culture Coordinator, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes), and Fred Mosqueda (Language and Culture Coordinator, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes). This event was the culmination of a three day visit to Broomfield from members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. The individuals who came to Broomfield---Chester Whiteman, Fred Mosqueda, Mary Mosqueda, Frank Medicine Water, Pauline Medicine Water, and Roy Dean Bull Coming---visited Open Space areas in Broomfield, recorded oral histories, and attended meals and other events during their time in Broomfield. The mingled soil represents a closer relationship between Broomfield (the black/brown soil was from near the Brunner House) and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, who still call this area home. The redish/orange soil from Oklahoma was gathered by Lori Lane during a trip to Oklahoma with a delegation from Broomfield---David Allison (History Coordinator), Lori Lane, Tim Harmos, and Aleitta Remilliard---in May 2023.Collection
