Aerial photo of First Filing of Broomfield Heights showing roads and some of the first houses built as well as old Broomfield in the bottom part of the photo. (b/w) Label from 2021 Exhibit: Aerial Photo of First Filing Neighborhood Under Construction, August 12, 1955 This photo shows the emerging road patterns of the “First Filing” neighborhood, the first phase of building that began in 1955 and is south of Midway Boulevard. “Second Filing” began in 1957 and is north of Midway Boulevard. Typical of 1950’s suburban planning, streets were “laid out in a curvilinear pattern to take advantage of land conformation, and parks, school and church sites have been laid out with signs designating their positions.” If you look closely at the bottom edge of this photo, you can see the earlier parts of Broomfield which had grown up along the train tracks. Just visible are the grain silos that still stand today. Since the 1950s, this area known as “Colman’s Lakeview” has become slowly encircled by major highways (Routes 36, 287, 128, and W. 120th), partitioning the neighborhood away from the modern housing and shopping developments that began with Broomfield Heights and shifted the city's center of commerce and social life. 1987.24.2 Gift of Jack Mefford
