Shuler, President of the Broomfield Heights Hospital Auxiliary, April 1958 A big concern for families was access to a doctor in case of an emergency. After water concerns, access to medical care was the second most addressed issue by the Turnpike Land Company. In September of 1955, The Turnpike Land Company announced that Dr. Leon L. Gordon, a surgeon and physician in Lafayette, had purchased one of the first homes that was built, and they shared his home address and phone number in The Broomfield Builder. By July 1956, a permanent family health clinic had been completed at Garden Center and would be staffed by Dr. Wallace Labaw (a family physician) and Dr. John Klob (a dentist). In spring of 1958, Turnpike Land Company founder Bal Swan donated a “gleaming white” v-8 Chevrolet ambulance for the city, with maintenance sponsored by the Hospital Auxiliary. “The new ambulance will completely erase any fears that residents of our community may have had about emergency first aid and efficient ambulance service in the event of [an] emergency involving their loved ones” wrote The Broomfield-Star Builder. Local patrol officers received training from Dr. Labaw and Dr. Klob, as well the American Red Cross in order to be able to man the ambulance at any time.
