(b/w) Label from 2021 Exhibit: Interior of the Empire Savings Bank at 1 Garden Center, c. 1956 Built in 1956, the Empire Savings Bank was the first commercial building built at the Garden Center business area. It was a modern design and featured drive-through banking, and a fireplace in the waiting lounge for customers. The bank was also designed with a spacious lower level that was originally intended as underground parking. Since Broomfield Heights was short on shopping options, a “Country Store” (or “Superette”) opened in the basement of the bank in August 1956. The 6,000 sq ft space included a “modern grocery and meat market, barber shop, drug store, and cleaning and pressing firm.” The store closed once the Broomfield Shopping Center opened in January 1958. 1987.24.124 Gift of Jack Mefford
