Description

A view of an unidentified Safeway store clerk placing groceries in the back of a woman's station wagon. There is a grocery store cart in the foreground with a large bag of Kraft flour. In the distance are a number of businesses in the Broomfield Heights shopping center: Liquor store, Alan Eber Drug Store, and a number of other other businesses. (b/w) (2 photos) Label from 2021 Exhibit: Safeway Store Clerk Helping Woman Load Station Wagon, c. 1958 The Broomfield Heights Shopping Center was designed to be the commercial hub for the new city. Located at the corner of Route 287 and West Midway Boulevard, the main anchor was a Safeway grocery store. The store boasted a “western ranch style construction” and many modern amenities that today’s shoppers would find familiar: automatic opening doors, air conditioning, refrigerated cases lining the walls, background music, “computing cash registers,” and plenty (133 spaces) of well-lit, paved parking. The grand opening of the Safeway was on January 30, 1958, and a special deal that day was a 25lb bag of Kitchen Craft Flour for $1.99, the type of flour this woman in the photo has in her cart. While the Safeway store isn’t visible in this photo, we can see the Alan Eber Drug Store (which also sold liquor) and a number of other other businesses. 1979.1.18a Gift of Empire Savings Bank
