Description

A photo of the first Broomfield Cottage school known as Aspen Cottage School located at 450 West1st Ave. There is a note saying it is the class of 1956. The photo shows what would be a residential house with a garage door replaces with windows and siding. Students are shown leaving the school some with bicycles. There are two teachers standing in the doorway, one waving goodbye. The photo has crop marks. (b/w) (2 copies) Label from 2021 Exhibit: Broomfield Schoolchildren Standing in Front of the Aspen Cottage School at 450 West 1st Ave, 1956 In 1955, all of Broomfield’s 36 children (grades 1-8) attended classes in a drafty two-room schoolhouse. However 1956 would bring a 500% increase in schoolchildren as hundreds of young families moved into their newly constructed homes. One newspaper ran the headline, “School Problems In Broomfield Heights May Be Among The Worst In Colorado.” The Turnpike Land Company’s quick solution would be the quaintly named “Cottage Schools” which involved taking a few of the newly built ranch-style homes and turning them into small schools. Broomfield ended up with four Cottage Schools - Aspen, Birch, Cedar, Cherry - before the city’s first formal elementary school (Emerald Elementary) opened in 1958.
