Description

A contact print of the first cottage schools in Broomfield Heights. There appears to be four or five homes that have been converted to school use, based on the bicycles in front of each building. The garage door has been replaced with windows and siding for additional classroom space. (b/w) Label from 2021 Exhibit: Parked Bicycles of the Students Attending Cottage Schools, c. 1957 Since almost all the town’s residents lived within less than one square mile, most children could walk or bike to school. This photo shows all four of Broomfield’s new cottage schools along 1st Ave, with student’s bicycles parked out front. Broomfield resident Debi Baker remembers attending the Cherry Cottage School in 1957, and said that each house held a different grade. She vividly remembered having to walk their belongings from the old school to the new one when her class moved to the new Emerald Elementary School. 1987.24.200 Gift of Jack Mefford
