Railroad Baggage Cart

Description

This is a baggage cart made of wood and metal. The cart has 4 metal wheels with rubber around them. The metal frame holds the wood platform in place. There is a metal locking mechanism at the back of the cart where the handle of another cart could have been hooked to it. The handle on this cart is metal with a wood shaft. The metal parts of the platform and all the wood parts have been painted green. The metal elsewhere on the cart has been painted red. There is a wood grid sticking up off the back of the cart forming a luggage stop to keep bags on the cart when it was moving. The words, "Broomfield Depot" and "Railway Express" have been painted on both sides of the cart in yellow paint. The handle is held up on the front of the cart by hardware that was not original to the cart, but was necessary to keep the handle out of the dirt. The cart measures 80" (h) x 119"(l) x 42" (w). This cart was on exhibit in front of the Broomfield Depot Museum when the City and County took over operations in 2011. Karen McGuire said her husband had previously replaced the wood on the cart.

Provenance

Notes

Purchased by donor at Union Pacific auction in Longmont. According to Brian Templeman, who rehabilitated the cart 9/2017 to 3/2018, the cart was made in 1905 based on time frame of metal strips along top of bed. After about 1907 these metal strips were moved to the side of the carts. The rubber on tires indicate the cart was made after 1900. The tires were made by Ford Motor Company.
