Name/Title
Wreckage of the 1958 Train Wreck in BroomfieldEntry/Object ID
1980.5.1.aDescription
Black and white photograph of the 1958 train crash in Broomfield. The photograph is not the original but a photograph of another photograph (original appears to be Gelatin Silver print with deckled edges, approximately 3" x 3"). This photograph is a newer color process, circa 1980s.
The image shows one train car which ran on top of a diesel locomotive, with tall grass, a barbed wire fence, and a small metal barrel on its side in the foreground. What appears to be a small wood structure with an upright metal barrel next to it is visible near the right edge of the photograph. Onlookers are barely visible just in front of the train wreckage. The collision between a Colorado & Southern freight train and passenger train happened on September 22, 1958 around 7:30 am just south of the 120th crossing. 3 individuals, at least 2 of them members of the trains' work crews, died in the crash, while 18 people were hospitalized.Collection
