Wreckage of the 1958 Train Wreck in BroomfieldEntry/Object ID
1980.5.1.bDescription
Black and white photograph of the 1958 train crash in Broomfield. The photograph is not the original but a photograph of another photograph (original appears to be Gelatin Silver print with deckled edges, approximately 3" x 3"). This photograph is a newer color process, circa 1980s.
The image shows a train which has collided with another. A train car is seen uplifted over a diesel locomotive of the other train. 5 individuals are barely visible on top of the locomotive to the right. A small wooden structure and tall grass are in front of the wreck, with a large dirt patch and more grass in the immediate foreground. The collision between a Colorado & Southern freight train and passenger train happened on September 22, 1958 around 7:30 am just south of the 120th crossing. 3 individuals, at least 2 of them members of the trains' work crews, died in the crash, while 18 people were hospitalized.Collection
