2017.13.5Description
Black and white photograph print of Mamie Doud Eisenhower speaking at the dedication of her namesake's library, dated July 7, 1963. The print is 6.5" x 8.5". The image shows Mamie at a microphone stand to the right, looking beyond the photographer's vantage point at a gathered crowd. Several individuals are sitting in seats behind her and to the left, with several onlookers sitting in grass in the background. Her husband, Dwight D. Eisenhower, can be seen in the front row of seats immediately to the left of Mamie. Roger Knight and Askel Nielsen (left to right), two close friends of the Eisenhowers who lived in Denver and invested heavily in the development of the Broomfield Heights community, are likely sitting just behind Dwight. The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library is visible just behind Mamie, to the right.
Label from 2021 Exhibit:
Former First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower at the Dedication of the New Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library at 12 Garden Center, July 7, 1963
Residents came together to fund a public library for Broomfield, soliciting donations throughout the community. A major donor to the project, Bal Swan, founder of the Empire Savings Bank and one of the investors in the Turnpike Land Company, was “fishing buddies” with former president Dwight D. Eisenhower. Swan suggested naming the new Broomfield library for his wife Mamie, who was honored by the gesture. The Eisenhowers attended the dedication of the new library on July 7, 1963, an event that drew most of the city’s residents.
The former library building at 12 Garden Center is now the Broomfield Veterans Museum.
