The swarm of new residents to Broomfield taxed the local Post Office, which was designed for a rural community of a few hundred residents who would travel into town periodically to receive their mail. There was no door to door home delivery of mail. The new residents of Broomfield Heights did not enjoy having to travel into the Colman’s Lakeview area by the train tracks, often having to stand in a long line outside to pick up their mail and packages. The residents mobilized quickly, petitioning for a new post office in Broomfield Heights and urged people to buy stamps to help reach the income threshold for a bigger building. Requirements for the US Post Office to offer door-to-door service included “$10,000 in yearly receipts, a population of 2,500, homes on 50% of the area, streets paved, sidewalks, street signs, and mail receptacles…” By November 29, 1957 the city reached these requirements, and construction began on a new building at 1380 Midway Boulevard, to be conveniently located between the new Garden Center and Broomfield Shopping Center. In this photo, post-office staff stand in front of their new building at 1380 Midway Blvd. At center is Miles Crawford, Broomfield’s Postmaster from 1940-1965. Miles was part of the Crawford Family, who ran a honey operation on their farm at 7380 W. 120th Ave. The Crawford Honey House is now next to the Depot Museum. Ph.136 Gift of Chris Deitz
