This is a set of 5 wooden train message forks. 1 fork is broken and stored in TB 103 in the basement of the Depot. The Ys are made of 2 tan wood rods attached to a metal Y, which holds the fork onto the black painted handle. On the metal string holder of 2 of the Ys is the text, "THE HI-SPEED DELY./ FORK CO./ SHELBYVILLE IND./ U.S. PAT. 1.902.669-CAN. PAT. 347483." One the metal of one of the Ys is different text, but it cannot be read. The Ys each measure 56" (h) x 18" (w) x 1" (d).
The forks were used by the dispatcher to give notes to the engineer on the passing train. Used until the two way radio was adpoted, railroads switched to these based on afluence. The C&S would have switched to raidos sooner than D&RGW.Collection
