Description

Harry Olson (aka Harold Olson) Home/Farm. Wife was Esther Olson. Looking west towards old Broomfield. Grain Elevators visible, including Zang Elevator and Silver Standard Elevator. According to a 1975 news article, "the place was homesteaded in 1896 by a man named Raggner. Mrs. Olson said that the original deed allowed for 180 acres, but when they bought the property, it included 80 acres. bounded by Pierce St. on the east and 120th on the north. The land adjoins that os Sauers' and later on, 35 additional acres were purchased from a neighbor." Label for exhibit: "Likely taken from the top of the hill where Main Street ascends south of 120th, we are given a view of the old center of Broomfield that grew up around the railroad tracks. This photo captures how Broomfield before the 1950s was a scattering of large farms surrounding a small social center situated around the railroad tracks, anchored by the grain elevators. If you look carefully, you can see the Zang Elevator with its curved drums. Just beyond it is the former Silver Standard Mill Elevator, replaced by the Coors Elevator that still stands today. In 1975, the property was described as “a large, neat white frame, three story house, with a winding lane going over a bridge…tall cottonwoods and black walnut trees surround the house. Birds sing cheerily and the bright sunshine touches gently rolling slopes that stretch away to the distant, snow splotched mountains.” Astoundingly this house still stands in 2022, with the address of 11840 Teller Street, but it is boarded up and slated for demolition. The farmland surrounding the house is now all gone, replaced with industrial buildings, storage units, and junk yard."
