Scope and Content

This binder has information about the history of Broomfield Schools. The first page of the binder describes the Lorraine School's main building and the water supply of the building. It seems to be written with intent for the building to be moved. Along with the document are a couple of hand written notes, that question the name of the Lorraine school and more. The second page has a picture of the front of the Lorraine school, taken on 2-2-65. The third page has the floorplan of the building, and the land that the building in on. The fourth page has a train map of the front range, including Broomfield, and has the locations of 'Wagner' and the 'Lorraine-Mandalay' school. The fifth page is an interview with Jim Norris from October of 1997, with notes by Marilyn Schroeder. The transcription includes the location of the Lorraine School before and after it was moved, the location of the the Semper School, and the location of the Denver View School. Page six is a letter written by Katherine Church in August of 1956, and details the building of a new school, the Mandalay school. The seventh page is a on record of the Lorraine school, possibly from a library, and the eighth page has information of what appears to be the deeds to the new Lorraine-Mandalay school, and other important documents. The ninth page has a letter from Peter McGraw to E.T. Kelly, and details that Kelly has bid for the Lorraine and Wagner properties, and has one. The back of the letter is in response to the front, and says that Kelly no longer wants the Wagner land, and still wants the Lorraine land. The eleventh page is a letter from attorney, Royal Irvin to Peter McGraw, and is about the exchange of the deed and the payment for the Lorraine land. The twelfth page is a letter from Peter McGraw to Meville Wilson, and asks if the shed and outdoor toilets on the Old Broomfield School land can be moved to another location. On page 13 is a copy of a newspaper article written in February 1985. The article writes about the opening of Mandalay Junior High, and the old Mandalay school. It also has an interview with Mary Jump, who was a teacher at the old Mandalay and Lorraine school, as well as some of the more modern schools. Jump says that the name of the school probably came from the poem written by Rudyard Kipling. Page 14 is an entry form for the Lorraine Elementary School. It has the location of the school, and some history about it. Although it says 'Lorraine was the fourth school in the District to be established in 1884', the 'fourth' was handwritten on, and crossed out 'first.' It says that Lorraine and Mandalay were joined in 1928, and that the two schools would have two teachers. This document does not know why the Lorraine school was named that. Ruth Nixon was the last teacher at Lorraine. Handwritten in the top right corner is, 'Lorraine was the fourth school established at the above location in 1914.' The rest of the pages in the binder are a handwritten copy of the Minute Book for District 25, that was used by the District Secretary at Jefferson County. It has the notes about the all the schools in Jefferson County, with notes taken by M.M. Miller, and others. Entries span from 1898 to 1924. The last page of the binder is a clipping from a newspaper that says that Mary Jump donated the Minute Book to the Arvada Historical Society. Written on the clipping is an address, a phone number, and other notes.
