This is a check tag from a coal mine in the Appalachia region of the U.S. They are also called miner's checks, pit tags, pit checks or time checks. It is a small round brass disk with a hole punched at the top and the number 2 etched into it. The tag measures 1.5" (diam).
This tag would have hung on a peg board at the entrance of the mine. Miners would take a tag off the board down into the mine with them during their shift, replacing the tag when their shift was completed. This allowed the crew chief to know who was in the mine at any time.Collection
