Sock Darner

Name/Title

Sock Darner

Entry/Object ID

2025.5.35

Description

Item is a wooden sock darner shaped sort of like a mushroom, with a convex top. Sock darners were used to make the darning process easier. During darning, which involves fixing holes in knitted fabric, the sock darner would be placed inside the sock to stretch the fabric firm, making it much easier to mend tears and breakage. This darner is made entirely of wood, with a carved handle secured by glue.
