x.629Scope and Content
This is an instruction book for a device called an "Instructograph," which was sold and used to train people to learn Morse code and its use on a telegraph machine. It is paper with staple binding, blue, 5" x 8.5," 48 pages. It was written by O.B. Kirkpatrick, who worked for the publisher, Instructograph Company, in Chicago 40, Illinois. The cover has images of two instructographs, "for wireless" and "for wire," with drawn telegraph towers on either side. The title "Telegraphy" is at the top of the cover, with "Continental Morse" and "American Morse" "Instruction" in the middle of the cover.
The book describes how to operate the machine and assemble its parts, and presents lessons meant to be learned on the instructograph itself. The instructograph had included tape spools which contained lessons, and would play back different messages in Morse code to the listener. The instructograph's lessons taught both Continental and American Morse code, meaning it could be used to learn telegraphy for railroad and other uses (the latter was typically used by railroads).Collection
