Description

[a]: One cream crepe under-dress lined with cream linen and satin. Front closure of hooks and eyes, boned with 7 stays and lace at front of collar. The long, flared skirt is pleated at the bottom, with a wide black velvet border. The under-dress has long, sheer blouse sleeves, with sheer, frilly cuffs. The cuffs are gathered at the wrist with a crepe band, which is decorated with 3 French knots. There are short under-sleeves of lace under the long sheer sleeves. [b]: One cream satin cape with over layer of tulle trimmed with black lace at edge. [c]: One black velvet cut-work bodice with silk floral appliques sewn to outlines of cut-work, and appliques are themselves filled in with black net and black lace. Bodice lined with white silk, which shows through the cut-work. Rounded, off-the-shoulder neckline trimmed with sheer white rushing. Two 3/4 length puffy sleeves of lace and appliques with white silk lining also visible, a band of black velvet running down top length of sleeves and another around the cuffs, and 2 black velvet bows are sewn on the band. The sleeve cuffs end in sheer white ruffles edged in white baby lace. Waist of bodice lined in white linen and boned with 9 stays and two underarm pads. One wide white grosgrain satin ribbon sewn is around the waist, three white satin ties sewn to front lining and hanging down the front. The waist of the bodice ends in a "v" and has hook and eye back closures. There are eyes sewn around waist for the skirt to hang off of. [d]: One remnant of a black velvet bodice accented with black silk openwork appliques filled in with black lace "brides". It has a square neckline, a hook and eye closure at the back. There is a black silk waist sash and a series of eyes sewn around the waist. [e], [f]: Two detached long sleeves of black velvet accented with cut-work. The cut-work has black silk floral appliques sewn to its outlines. Interior of braid filled in with needlework lace "brides". [g]: Two white cotton flared, pagoda-style sleeves, the edge of the sleeves are trimmed with white baby lace and band of white openwork lace near cuff. [h]: One black velvet, full-length skirt with short train and room for a bustle. The skirt is heavily accented with a floral cut-work pattern, with the holes filled in with a black silk braid appliques following the outlines of the holes and filled in with needlework lace "brides" (twisted threads joined together like cobwebs). There is a series of hooks and eyes sewn around waist and the back of the skirt has a closure of hooks and eyes.
