Result: Attributed Collection 054447 (2023.002.01.01 - .09) Speakers of Note: Hon. Hewitt Bostock Hon. Gildas Molgat This Royal Standard China dish set, made in England, has a gold and red rim detail with the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada in the top center. The saucer has a scalloped rim. This Royal Standard China maker's mark dates to 1916-1930. The Royal Coat of Arms on this dish set was the version introduced in 1921 and used until 1957. These dates indicate the dish set was manufactured sometime from 1921-1930. Speaker Hewitt Bostock was in the role from 1922-1930 and was likely in this position for the acquisition of this dish set. Based on an oral history of a Senate employee, we know that the set was used until 2008 and was used by Speaker Gildas Molgat. The dish set was used until 2008 when the Senate approved its own emblem and the use of the arms of Canada by the Senate was discontinued. Collection 054451 (2023.002.01.10 & .11) Speakers of Note: Hon. Joseph Edouard Cauchon (1867 1869) (1869 1872) (1872) Maker's mark: “A. Bros Real Ironstone China” indicating manufacturer G.L. Ashworth & Brothers Ltd (c. 1861-1968) when the company was renamed Mason's Ironstone China Ltd. The mark on this dish set indicates a manufacture date from 1862-1891 because “A. Bros” is printed under the crown. This mark is likely pre-1891 because it does not include “England” on it, which is added to the mark in 1891. This time period suggests that the dish set may have been used by the first Speaker of the Senate Hon. Joseph Edouard Cauchon (and possibly even by parliamentarians pre-Constitution). Hon. Joseph Edouard Cauchon was born in St. Roch, Lower Canada (now a neighbourhood of Quebec City) in 1816.
