Photograph, Albumen: Cab Stand Near East Block, Parliament Hill
Entry/Object ID
P2029
Description
One albumen photograph depicting a view of a cab stand on Wellington Street with the gates and East Block of the Parliament Buildings in the background. Cab stand is a small building with steep shingled roof, cupola, and decorated gable above a three-panel bay window. A smaller double window faces the street. The platform in front of the building is falling apart. There are thirteen people in the photograph, some of whom are wearing long fur coats and fur hats. Further suggesting that this is a winter scene is the horse drawn caleche with skis, not wheels on it, which is lined with furs. The horse has a blanket on it. Tram lines are visible in the street, suggesting very little snow. Topley Photograph. Pressed into the bottom proper right corner of the photograph: "TOPLEY PHOTOGRAPH", and proper left corner: "OTTAWA". Written on the back: "Cab Stand. 1879. East Block / Parliament Bldgs. Ottawa / Donor Pat MacDonald / 1000 Silver St / Ottawa / Sept 1975".
