Entry/Object ID
P4103
Description
One black and white gelatin silver photograph depicting the ruins of Colonel By's home in Major's Hill Park, taken in 1861, copy of a photograph taken by a friend of Miss Lockwood's. Image shows a stone foundation (field stone?) with chimneys at either end. An opening for a hearth can be seen half-way up the farthest chimney, suggesting that this was a two story building. Trees surround the ruins. On front, under photograph: "Ruins in Major's Hill No 1344" and a red and white sticker: "C-3-4". On back: "Ruins of Col. By's House / on Major's Hill in 1866 - 1861 / No. 1344 / From a photograph taken by a / friend of Miss Lockwoods - / The family lent the original to / Mrs. J. B. Simpson, secretary of / The Historic Landmarks Branch / 1914 / 173 Percy St Ottawa / No. 1344".
