Research Notes

Notes

Ellen "Ellie" Hardy Baskerville was born on 06 October 1890 in Montana, USA to Thomas Hardy Baskerville (1853- 1891) and Margaret Jane Barrett (1860- 1936), both natives of Carleton County, Ontario. After the death of her father, who had moved the family to Montana following the lumber industry, the family (Margaret, Ellie and her sister Jane) returned to Ottawa. Ellie attended Lisgar Collegiate (then Ottawa Collegiate Institute) where she was the editor of the Vox and the valedictorian of her class in 1907. Ellie then attended the Ottawa Normal School where she trained as a kindergarten teacher, producing several training books and essays based on Froebel; very cutting edge for the times. Shortly after graduating, Ellie contracted polio and unfortunately she passed away on 23 August 1910 at just 20 years old. She is buried in Ramsayville Cemetery.
