Built in the Tudor style by Fisheries Commissioner William F. Whitcher in 1869, the Ottawa Protestant Children's Hospital (1888-1905) was located at 197-199 Wurtemburg Street in Sandy Hill. It was originally run by the Children' League, the President of the League being Lady Stanley, however, by the turn of the century it was deeply in debt and was forced to close shortly thereafter. It became the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in 1953.
Harriet Peck was born on Prince Edward Island in 1873 and trained as a nurse at the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1900. On the 1901 Canada Census she is listed as a trained nurse working and living at the Ottawa Children's Hospital.
