Rudolph Jacob, son of August Jacob and Minna Rank, was born in Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony, Germany on November 13, 1877. Rudolph apprenticed as a pastry chef before finding gainful employment as a baker on German-based merchant ships around the turn of the century. He worked aboard the S.S. Konig Albert for a time, sailing as far afield as China and the United States, where he landed in 1905. A few years later, Rudolph once again landed in New York, this time intending to stay, arriving from the Port of Bremen aboard the Neckar on October 20, 1909. While in New York he met Maria Shoenwandt, originally of Berlin. Maria was eight years his junior, and had arrived in New York in 1908 having sailed aboard the Patricia from Hamburg on November 22, 1908. On the 1910 United States Federal Census she was living on Webster Avenue in New Jersey, working as a household servant.
Rudolph arrived in Canada on November 16, 1910 , and he and Maria were married on April 16, 1911. His residence is listed as the Russell Hotel on the marriage certificate, where he had found work as a baker. Rudolph continued to both live and work at the Russell House Hotel until September of 1915 when the family moved to Edmonton where he had been offered work as a pastry chef at the newly-opened Hotel Macdonald. On the 1921 Canada Census, Rudolph is listed as a pastry cook, living on 95th Street, Edmonton, with wife Maria, and four children: Annemarie (the donor's mother), Gertrude, Rudolph Jr., and Helen (son Walter would be born several years later). Rudolph passed away at Edmonton in 1961, predeceased by Maria in 1945.
