Sergeant George Charles Bennett, No. 410239, was born on 28 August 1895 in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. George was the son of Charles Stanley Bennett (c.1868, England) and Annie Gruer (1866, Scotland).
George enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 27 February 1915 at the age of 20 and was assigned to 'C' Company of the 38th (Ottawa) Battalion. The Battalion left Montreal in August 1915, first landing in Bermuda on 12 August 1915 for garrison duty before sailing aboard the Grampian to England on 31 May 1916. The 38th arrived in France in August of 1916 and fought as part of the 4th Canadian Division, 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade. The 38th fought at the Somme, Arras, Vimy, Passchendaele and Amiens among other pivotal Canadian battles.
S/Sgt. Bennett was wounded at Arras in 1917 but returned to fight again and was not formally discharged until 31 March 1919 after "exemplary" service. His wounds received at Arras resulted in a large scar on his left hip. On 6 June 1920 George married Margaret Stewart (1895, Low, PQ - 1963) and in 1921 they lived at 31A Euclid St., Ottawa.
George Charles Bennett died in Ottawa in 1983.
