TO THE PUBLIC // Having been grossly and wantonly insulted yesterday, in the Streets of Bytown by // Edward V. Cortland, and having promptly demanded from the individual (through a friend) the usual satisfaction, which that cowardly miscreant, without assigning any reason, refuse to grant. // I have no other course left to me, but to proclaim to the world, and I now do so that Edward Van Cortlandt, Surgeon, of this place, is a mean and contemptible liar, slander, a ruffian; a miserable, driveling,
cowardly scoundrel, a pitiful poltroon, and utterly unworthy of the notice of any one having pretensions to the character of a gentleman. // R. HERVEY, Jr. // Bytown, Saturday Morning, // 19th August, 1848.Notes
