Two almost identical color posters of a sketch of colonel by and the commissariat building, as seen looking up from the locks. Colonel by stands in profile to the viewer's left, in uniform with his arms crossed. Text is at the bottom of (a) only. (b) Has the same illustration as (a), and is the same size, but does not have a black border. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ILLUSTRATION ON BOTH PIECES, PARTIALLY OBSCURED: "COLONEL BY". ON (A), ALONG THE BOTTOM: "Colonel By - Grandfather of the St. Lawrence Seaway / Colonel John By of the Royal Engineers ranks high among our nation's greatest builders. Entrusted in 1826 with the mighty task of carving a water route from the Great Lakes, which would not be so vulnerable to attack from the south, he built our famous Rideau Canal which is still in use.
