Description

An oval belt buckle, with a clear cabochon over print in the centre. Branded to Bill McColman. Features: An oval brass belt buckle, with a black enamel filled border design, and in-set in the centre is a clear, oval cabochon over gold foil on black print. The buckle is flat. Front Design: The buckle is comprised of a broad decorative border, and a clear resin covered core. The border (4.5-8mm)has an art nouveau-esque border design, with organic soft lines in brass, and the empty space to the left and right filled with black enamel. The centre space (46mm H x 64mm W) is a black oval with gold foil print, covered in clear resin (or similar poured substance). In the middle to upper portion of the centre space is an oil tanker facing right, with an oil derrick seen behind. Below is the serif text "Bill McColman". Back Elements: The back has an irregular spotted texture; a slightly angled round hook with a ball tip; and an irregular hexagon (with indented base sides) meeting the buckle at two points. Between the hook and hinge is a maker's mark that is partially obscured by adhesive residue. Identified text includes "SOLID BRASS", "1998", and "TAIWAN". Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 3 June 2020): Bill McColman. Brass oval belt buckle with black enamel face, gold tanker truck in center (Donated by Gordon McQuaig).

Cleanliness

The back has two types of adhesive residue: a large spot of white residue in the centre and on the bar of the hinge; and two points of yellow-orange residue, one a narrow vertical band to the left, and a larger reverse-"C" shaped patch to the right.

Surface

Light to heavy scratched on the surface of the front cabochon/resin. Most notably: two deep, vertical parallel scratches to the centre-left, with a diagonal scratch intersecting with the second scratch; a deep diagonal scratch over the "Mc" in "McColman", and clusters of small scratches/scuffs on the bottom and right side.

Materials

A notable dent on the top-left edge of the buckle front.

Mechanism

The hinge has a full range of movement with slight stiffness and a low amount of force.
