Description

A die-cast money bank, in the shape of a scale replica of a Ford Model "T" Van from 1913. This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1984, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #1 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations for $5.99. The vehicle on which this is modelled was used by Texaco Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering their products. Description The piece is comprised of metal, plastic, and rubber. The body of the vehicle is white metal with a red metal roof and running board. The body is branding for Texaco, in the form of a round star logo on the driver’s and passenger’s doors (white sticker), and the text “THE TEXAS COMPANY; PETROLEUM & ITS PRODUCTS” on the left and right sides of the trunk. The vehicle's roof takes two forms, a leather-textured front, and a wood-panelling textured back with raised sides. It is adorned with plastic elements on the interior (gold steering column and brown 'upholstered' seat), the widescreen frame and side lights (gold, no glass), the headlights and grill (gold), the wheel spokes (red), and the undercarriage (black). The tires are black rubber with the ERTL text logo in the moulding. The wheels are functional and have a full range of motion. The rear of the vehicle acts as a money bank, with a slit at the top, and a locking closure on the underside (key attached). On the plastic underside of the vehicle is moulded undercarriage detailing, the wheel axles, the model's manufacturer's marks, and the serial number (white stamp). Money Bank Elements In the middle of the vehicle's back area is a 3.5mm by 33mm slit where coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly below the slit, is a 17mm by 32mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key. Manufacturer's Marks On the underside of the vehicle are moulded the following details: - "The ERTL Co.; DYERSVILLE IOWA USA; MADE IN U.S.A." (Top, middle) - "REPLICA FORD 1913 MODEL T VAN" (bottom, middle) - "2054G" (White stamp on the underside of the left running board). Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 2/18/2020): Still bank in the shape of a replica 1913 Ford Model T van. White van with red canopy and side board, and gold grill and accents. Side is labeled The Texas Company "Petroleum and Its Products." Texaco logo on doors. Slot in top of van to deposit coins. K
