A die-cast money bank, in the shape of a scale replica of a 1905 Ford Delivery Car, branded to Texaco.
This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1986, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #4 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations for $12.99.
The vehicle on which this is modelled was likely one of the first vehicles utilized by Texaco (who started business in 1902) Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering their products in the 1900s.
Description
The piece is comprised of metal, plastic, and rubber. The body of the vehicle is black and red metal. The vehicle has branding for Texaco, in the form of a round star logo below the driver’s and passenger’s windows, and the text “THE TEXAS COMPANY; PETROLEUM & ITS PRODUCTS” on the left and right sides of the trunk. It is adorned with plastic elements on the interior (gold steering column and brown 'upholstered' seat), the headlights (gold), the wheel spokes (gold), and the undercarriage (black). The tires are a white-grey rubber with the ERTL text logo in the moulding. The wheels are functional and have a full range of motion. The rear of the vehicle acts as a money bank, with a slit at the top, and a locking closure on the underside (key attached). On the plastic underside of the vehicle is moulded undercarriage detailing, the wheel axles, the model's manufacturer's marks, and the serial number (debossed stamp).
Money Bank Elements
In the middle of the vehicle's back area is a 4mm by 33mm slit where coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly below the slit, is a 16mm by 33mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key.
Manufacturer's Marks
On the underside of the vehicle are moulded the following details:
- "The ERTL Co.; DYERSVILLE IOWA USA; MADE IN U.S.A." (Top, left)
- "REPLICA 1905; FORD'S FIRST DELIVERY CAR" (bottom, left)
- "3027" (Pressed into the plastic of the underside, between the above elements).
