Description

An oval cast-metal belt buckle, branded to Brooks. Features: An oval belt buckle, silver colored with etchings, and black enamel design and lettering. The buckle is domed. Front Design: Along the outside edge of the front face is a jagged etched design that curls in to make four spirals (two on the left side and two on the right). At the bottom is black enamel block text that reads "BROOKS". In the center of the buckle is a black enamel shape of two overlapping ovals bordered by the jagged etching pattern. In the center of the black enamel is a gold colored oil derrick design with red details. Back elements: The back is smooth, with a hammered texture edge. There is the broken base of a hook, and an E shaped hinge fused to the buckle in two places. Between the hook and hinge there is a nickel sized makers mark. Along the top in curved text reads "100% HANDCRAFTED", along the bottom in curved text it reads "Denver, Colo.", and in the center there is a fleur-de-lis design featuring the letters "J H" or "J V H". Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 3 June 2020): Brooks. Oval silver belt buckle with black onyx face. Gold and red derrick in centre.

Surface

There is some dark tarnishing under the "B" and "R" on the front surface. There also is some slight scratching in the top right near the edge. Back: There is a triangle of yellow, sticky adhesive residue under the makers mark, as well as a rectangle of white adhesive residue above the makers mark. There is some light scratching on the back, most notably a vertical scratch between the hinge and the edge of the buckle.

Materials

There is cracking and lifting in the enamel on the front surface. The most notable cracks are separating the upper and lower hemispheres of the enamel shape, and at the top of the rig design. The upper half of the enamel shape is lifting.

Mechanism

The hook is broken off, and the hinge is welded into place and does not move.
