Description

Oval belt buckle, branded to Baker Oil Treating. The top and bottom edges have been ground-down. Features: An oval (with ground-down top and bottom edges), cast metal (likely brass) belt buckle, finished in antique-bronze. The buckle is rounded/concave. Front Design: A 3mm, rope-patterned border around the outer edge, and a round, raised 3mm, rope-patterned border at the centre (40mm in diameter). In the space between the raised borders is filled with raised plant-esque patterning. The interior of the round border is rubber/plastic cabochon-covered printed design. The design has a white base, with navy-blue text at the top (curved to the space) "BAKER"; an open triangular logo (navy-blue) with the interior shape that of a triangular chemical flask, and a yellow liquid drop in the centre. Curved to the base of the space in black is "OIL TREATING". Back Elements: The back has a rough finish. The hook was a rounded oval base but has been partially docked leaving a stump. The hinge base is decorative and present, but the hinge has been removed and is missing. Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 3 June 2020): Baker Oil Treating. Oval brass belt buckle with circular white enamel face. Blue text. Top and bottom edges have been cut away. (Donated by Gordon McQuaig).

Cleanliness

White residue/particulates on the upper half of the front, in the grooves and recessed areas. Small areas of adhesive residue with paper/foam fibers attached.

Structure

The top and bottom edges have been intentionally ground-down, removing roughly 6mm from the height. The exposed material suggests the damage was done with an item of electric hardware, possibly a hand-held grinder or saw. The edges of the damage are rough, with sharp edges, particularly on the backside. On the reverse, the hook has also been docked through the same method, leaving only a blunt stump. The hinge loop has been removed (mssing), and the hinge base has also be damaged with the top-end chipped.
