A die-cast money bank, in the shape of a scale replica of a 1930 Diamond T Fuel Tanker, branded to Texaco.
This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1990, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #7 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations for $15.99.
This particular model is a replica of a 1930 Diamond T Fuel Tanker (produced by Diamond Reo Trucks), which is one of the vehicles used by Texaco Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering products in the 1930s. It is also the model of fuel tanker that was used to transport the first oil produced by Leduc #1.
Description
The piece is comprised of metal, plastic, and rubber. The cab and tank of the vehicle are red metal, with black metal running boards/mudguards. The vehicle has branding for Texaco, in the form of a round star logo on the passenger’s door, the raised text “TEXACO” on the left and right sides of the tank, and the round star logo and "TEXACO" text on the rear of the tank. There is also a small text "TEXACO" label above the widescreen of the cab. Other moulded features in the metal are a raised strip along the top of the tank with four raised domes; radiator elements on the hood of the cab; and taillights and licence plate on the rear. Plastic elements include those on the interior (black console, steering wheel, and bench seat), the cab roof (black with a canvas texture), the grill and headlights (silver), front and rear bumpers (black), the wheel spokes (red), and the undercarriage (black). There are eleven wheels total, with two wheels at the front of the vehicle; a spare mounted on the driver's door; and eight wheels at the back of the vehicle in a configuration of four sets of two. The tires are black rubber with the ERTL text logo in the moulding and are functional with a full range of motion. The tanker portion of the vehicle acts as a money bank, with a slit at the top, and a locking closure on the underside (key attached). On the plastic underside of the vehicle are moulded wheel axles, the model's manufacturer's marks, and the serial number (debossed stamp).
Money Bank Elements
In the middle of the vehicle's back area is a 4mm by 33mm slit where coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly below the slit, is a 15mm by 31mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key.
Manufacturer's Marks
On the underside of the vehicle are moulded the following details:
- "1990 EDITION #7" (far-left)
- "DIAMOND T 1930 21/2 TON" (inner-left)
- "ERTL; DYERSVILLE, IOWA 52040; MADE IN U.S.A" (right)
- "2300" (Pressed into the plastic of the underside, to the inner-right).
