This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1993, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #10 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations.
This particular model is a replica of a 1939 Dodge Airflow, which is one of the vehicles used by Texaco Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering products in the late-1930s and 1940s.
Description
The piece is comprised of metal, plastic, and rubber. The cab and tank of the vehicle are red metal; and has moulded features in the metal including headlights (with clear plastic 'glass'), roof lights, rear lights, a raised strip along the top of the tank with five squares of diamond textured panels, handlebars along each side of the tank, and taillights. Plastic elements include those on the interior (black console, steering wheel, and bench seat), the grill (silver), the bulbs in the headlights (clear), front and rear bumpers (silver), the hubcaps (red), the driver's and passenger's side steps (black, diamond texture) and the undercarriage (black). The vehicle has branding for Texaco, in the form of a round star logo with the text "THE TEXAS COMPANY" below, on the driver's and passenger’s doors, the raised text “TEXACO” on the left and right sides of the tank, and the text "TOUR WITH TEXICO" on the rear of the tank. There are six wheels total, with two wheels at the front of the vehicle and four wheels at the back of the vehicle in a configuration of two sets of two. The tires are black rubber with the ERTL text logo in the moulding and are functional with a full range of motion. The tanker portion of the vehicle acts as a money bank, with a slit at the top, and a locking closure on the underside (key attached). On the plastic underside of the vehicle are moulded wheel axles, the model's manufacturer's marks, and the serial number (debossed stamp).
Money Bank Elements
In the middle of the vehicle's back area is a 4mm by 31mm slit where coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly below the slit, is a 19mm by 35mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key.
Manufacturer's Marks
On the underside of the vehicle are moulded the following details:
- "PRODUCT UNDER LICENSE WITH CHRYSLER CORP" (top-left)
- "0743" (Pressed into the plastic of the underside, middle-left.
