Description

A die-cast money bank, in the shape of a scale replica of a 1918 Ford Model "T" Runabout, branded to Texaco. This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1988, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #5 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations. The vehicle on which this is modelled was used by Texaco Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering their products in the 1920s. Description The piece is comprised of plastic, metal, and rubber elements. The body of the vehicle is black metal, with white text on either side of the trunk reading "THE TEXAS COMPANY; "PETROLEUM & ITS PRODUCTS"", and a round star Texaco logo (white circle, red five-point star, green "T", and black "TEXACO") on the driver and passenger doors. Along the base, the running board (step and mudguards) on each side is in red metal. The roof of the vehicle is in the shape of a fabric top, made from plastic with a canvas-like texture. The front driver's compartment elements are in silver plastic and include a widescreen frame (no glass), side lights, and the driving console with the steering wheel. Towards the back for the driver's comparison is an upholstered seat in brown plastic. At the front of the vehicle is a silver plastic grill with attached headlights. At the back of the vehicle is the trunk (with a leather-like texture and strap detailing) in black metal, which acts as the money bank, with a slot in the top, and a locking access panel on the underside (key attached). The underside of the vehicle is moulded black plastic and includes undercarriage detailing, the wheel axles, the money bank access lock and key, and the model's manufacturer's marks. The wheels are white rubber branded with the ERTL text logo, and silver plastic spokes. Money Bank Elements In the middle of the vehicle's trunk is a 4mm by 30mm slit where coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly below the slit, is an 11mm by 30mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key. Manufacturer's Marks On the underside of the vehicle are moulded the following details: - "ERTL; DYERSVILLE IOWA USA; MADE IN U.S.A." (Middle, right) - "REPLICA 1918; FORD MODEL "T"; RUNABOUT" (Middle, left) - "2608" (Pressed into the plastic of the underside, at the rear of the vehicle by the left wheel). Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 2/18/2020): Still bank in the shape of a replica 1918 Ford Model T Runabout. Black car with red running board and chrome accents. Side is labeled The Texas Company "Petroleum and Its Products." Texaco logo on doors. Car is open with a canopy roof and brown upholster.
