Belt Buckle, Accessory, Leather, Bestway, BrownDescription
Large, oval leather belt buckle, branded to Bestway.
Features: An oval belt buckle made from leather on metal. The buckle is concave in shape.
Front Design: The front of the buckle is comprised of a large oval of leather, with a band overlaid horizontally across the face. The seams are sewn with thick, cream thread. Across the horizontal band is debossed is rounded block text "BESTWAY".
Back Elements: The back is covered with a lighter coloured leather, also stitched around the border with cream thread. A faint, circular maker's mark can be seen pressed into the leather, overlapping the hook. However, other than a triangular burst border and overall shape, the details cannot be made out. Beneath the leather cover appears to be a oval metal plate, slightly small than the overall area of the leather. Holes in the leather have been made, through which the hook and hinge are exposed. The hook is flat and curved inward. The hinge is an irregular hexagon, lightly bent, attached via a rounded, cylindrical base.
Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 3 June 2020): Bestway. Oval leather belt buckle. Color of text has completely faded away.Collection

Two types of adhesive residue on the back. At the base of the hinge is a patch of orange-brown adhesive, and a spot beneath the hinge. Further to the left is some discolouration/residue from a (not removed) large patch of hot glue (from a prior mounting).Surface
The surface of both front and back are lightly to moderately scratched and scuffed. The most raised point on the front (over the text) shows high wear.Materials
The leather has darkened around the edges, partially from intentional staining, but also smoothed and darkened from handling.
Heavy creasing in the leather from being bent and warped. Most prevalent along the bottom-front where the greatest warping is present. Some creasing is also seen along front-top.Structure
The shape has become warped on the bottom of the buckle, bent inward.Mechanism
After hot glue removal, the hinge now moved stiffly though does have a full range of movement.Notes
[9 May, 2023 - Danielle Lane] Efforts were made to remove the majority of the remaining hot glue (from past mounting) as possible without damaging the leather. The previously trapped hinge has been released to move freely. Only some small spots of hot glue remain.Created By
