A die-cast money bank, in the shape of a scale replica of a 1932 Ford Sedan Delivery Car, branded to Texaco.
This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1986, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #3 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations for $7.99.
The vehicle on which this is modelled is one of the vehicles utilized by Texaco Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering their products in the 1930s.
Description
The piece is comprised of metal, plastic, and rubber. The vehicle's body is white metal, with a red metal roof section and running board. The vehicle has branding for Texaco, in the form of a round star logo on the driver’s and passenger’s doors (white, square sticker), and the text “THE TEXAS COMPANY; "PETROLEUM & IT'S PRODUCTS” on the left and right sides of the rear section. The red section of the roof has a leather texture. It is adorned with plastic elements on the interior (brown console, black steering wheel, and black bench seat), the grill and headlights (silver), the front and rear bumpers (silver), the wheel spokes (black with silver centre), and the undercarriage (black). The front windscreen is filled with clear plastic, though the side windows are 'glassless'.The tires are a black rubber with the ERTL text logo in the moulding. The wheels are functional and have a full range of motion. There is also a fifth spare wheel positioned to the front of the right running board, which also has a rubber tire. The vehicle's rear section acts as a money bank, with a slit at the top, and a locking closure on the underside (key attached). On the plastic underside of the vehicle is moulded undercarriage detailing, the wheel axles, the model's manufacturer's marks, and the serial number (debossed stamp).
Money Bank Elements
On the top, at the rear of the vehicle is a 4mm by 33mm slit where coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly below the slit, is a 16mm by 31.5mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key.
Manufacturer's Marks
On the underside of the vehicle are moulded the following details:
- "The ERTL Co.; DYERSVILLE IOWA USA; MADE IN CHINA" (right running board)
- "REPLICA FORD; 1932 FORD DELIVERY VAN" (left running board)
- "2356G" (Pressed into the plastic at the centre of the plastic undercarriage).
