Description

A die-cast money bank, in the shape of a scale replica of a horse-drawn tanker from the 1900s. This replica money bank was produced by toy-makers ERTL in 1991, and is part of the Texaco Truck Series which began production in 1984. It is #8 in the series. These replicas were produced as promotional items for adults and children, and appear to have been sold in Texaco gas stations for $16.99. The vehicles on which this is modelled were used by Texaco Jobbers (the middleman between the company that refines the petroleum products and buyers and retailers) and other distributors when delivering their products in the 1900s. Description The piece is comprised of four moving parts: Two die-cast black horses; a black harness; and the die-cast tanker/money bank with a plastic base and wheels. The two horses are identical casts, with a black base colour, and white detailing of a vertical strip down their muzzle and a large airbrushed patch on the croup (upper rump) with back spots throughout. The harness and bridle are also cast as part of the horse. Connecting the horses to the tanker is plastic casting of the harness, trace, and front two wheels; which connects to the plastic base of the tanker on a swivel. The tanker itself is made from three parts: the silver die-cast tanker body, the black plastic driver's seat and cover, and the black plastic base with the back two wheels. The die-cast tanker body is in a matte metallic silver colour, and in a long cylindrical shape with an irregular hexagonal end and rectangular front including a footrest for the driver. The body has Texaco-branded decals on both sides (mirrored) and one of the back. The largest decal is in the middle of both sides, and extends the length of the cylindrical section and is comprised of a grey bass (matching the silver of the body), a fine red border with indented corners a couple of millimetres in from the edge of the decal, within which is the large black block text "THE TEXAS COMPANY", with the small black block text "Petroleum and its Products." below. At the front of the tanker section, below the driver's seat is a small rectangular decal with a matching fine red border with indented corners, inside of which is the Texaco star logo (red-filled star with a green "T" inside). At the back of the tanker, on either side of the hexagonal section is another small rectangular decal with a matching border, inside of which is the stylised BLACK text "CRYSTALITE KEROSENE". On the four wheels, the hub (centre) is coloured red. On the back-end of the tanker is an irregular hexagon decal with a fine red border in the shape of the decal, inside which is the star-shaped Texaco logo (red-filled star with green "T" inside), and the following black serif text over top: "TEXACO" (top), and "PETROLEUM PRODUCTS" (bottom). Money Bank Elements In the centre of the tanker's top is a 4mm by 31mm slit what coins can be deposited. On the underside, directly beneath the slit, is a 16mm by 31mm locking opening, through which the money can be retrieved. Attached is a small 14mm by 20mm key. Manufacturer's Marks On the underside of the tanker are molded the following details: - "7020-9093" (on the underside of the trace as well as on the underside of the driver's footrest) - "1991 EDITION #8" (Right-side of the tanker underside) - "ERTL; DYERSVILLE IOWA, 52040; MADE IN MEXICO" (Left-side of the tanker underside) - "2141" (Pressed into he underside of the tanker between the front wheels) Old Description (Kelsey Dalrymple, 2/18/2020): Still bank in the shape of a replica horse-drawn oil wagon.
