General Notes

Note

On May 17, 1930, a modern glider was officially gifted to the Toronto Flying Club (T.F.C.) by the Tuckett Tobacco Co. Ltd. of Hamilton, makers of the famous Buckingham Cigarettes. The glider was christened the "Buckingham Booster" by the wife of Toronto Mayor Bert S. Wemp at a formal presentation made at the Leaside Aerodrome as nearly 3,000 spectators looked on. Many successful demonstrations of the glider were then performed for the gathered crowd by T.F.C. president Earl M. Hand and pilot Jim Crang. [text from Leaside Aerodrome facebook post May 17 2021] The glider, a primary glider, was built by Alexander Aircraft, manufacturers of the well-known Eaglerock airplanes. Initially, it was operated by the Toronto Flying Club per se, until formation of the Glider Section of that TFC which persisted for two years. Interest waned in the absence of any higher performance glider to which pilots could progress into actual gliding let alone soaring.
