General Notes

Note

Cook's Airstrip was a farm airstrip, established on his farm near Pincher Creek by Alvin Cook. Alvin supported the early explorers of the southern Alberta mountain wave, hosting camps of glider pilots at his farm, encouraging flights from his airstrip, permitting erection of a hangar on his land by the Cu Nim Gliding Club. Many of the first successful wave flights launched from Cook's Airstrip including the first flight about 30,000', the first Canadian Diamond climb, and the famous down wind flight by Julien Audette starting from the wave at 27,300 feet and ending 10 miles east of Moose Jaw. The stories of Cook's Airstrip and early wave flights are told beautifully in Ursula Wiese's book "Stalking the Mountain Wave" available for download at https://sac.ca/sac-archives/.
