Description

David Webb was one of the most successful Canadian glider pilot over the long period from 1963 through 1991. David's record of winning Canadian National Contests no fewer than eleven times: Open Class wins in 1963, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1975, 1977, and 1979, followed by Standard Class first places in 1983, 1985, and 1990. He represented Canada at eleven World Championships commencing in 1963 and finalized only in 1991. That is a remarkable span of 29 years of elite soaring performance. Along the way, David Webb was awarded his Diamond badge in 1963, Canada #3. He set new Canadian records for free distance in 1963 (638 km), and speed around a 300 km triangle. It is not a surprise to learn David was nominated by Canada for the Paul Tissandier Diploma, and was awarded that FAI recognition in 1991, the citation reading "A most accomplished aeronaut, David Webb has been flying gliders for over 40 years. Since he first flew in England as a student in a Kirby Kadet he has accumulated over 3000 hours in gliders. He has represented Canada eleven times in World Championships finishing twice in the top ten."
