Gordon Oates was a prominent Canadian glider pilot, active in cross-country record-setting and competition in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
On the competition side, Gord won Canadian national competitions in 1957 and 1958, in both cases in Brantford, Ontario. He flew a Skylark 3d, CF-ZCW. That success earned him the opportunity to represent Canada in the 1958 World Gliding Championships held at Leszno, Poland.
In 1958, he took home both the Canadair Trophy (best five flights) and the BAIC Trophy (best single flight), repeating as BAIC Trophy winner in 1960. He held Canadian records for speeds around triangles of 100, 200 and 300 km and for gain of altitude.
